Computational analysis of 4-8 meshes with application to surface simplification using global error

چکیده
We present computational results when computing approximations of a class of meshes with subdivision connectivity, known as 4-8 meshes. We consider algorithms using vertex decimation or vertex insertion. We explain that a full decomposition of a 4-8 mesh using global error can be obtained with an (n logn) decimation algorithm. Our algorithm produces progressive and adaptive representations of terrain data or subdivision surfaces in R having arbitrary topology.

Mesh Optimization Using Global Error with Application to Geometry Simplification
In this paper we present a linear running time optimization algorithm for meshes with subdivision connectivity, e.g. subdivision surfaces. The algorithm optimizes a model using a metric defined by the user. Two functionals are used to build the metric: a rate functional and a distortion (i.e. error) functional. The distortion functional defines the error function to minimize, whereas the rate f...
متن کاملRate-Distortion Optimal Mesh Simplification for Communications
The thesis studies the optimization of a specific type of computer graphic representation: polygon-based, textured models. More precisely, we focus on meshes having 4-8 connectivity. We study a progressive and adaptive representation for textured 4-8 meshes suitable for transmission. Our results are valid for 4-8 meshes built from matrices of amplitudes, or given as approximations of a subdivis...
متن کاملComputational analysis of mesh simplification using global error
Meshes with (recursive) subdivision connectivity, such as subdivision surfaces, are increasingly popular in computer graphics. They present several advantages over their Delaunay-type based counterparts, e.g., Triangulated Irregular Networks (TINs), such as efficient processing, compact storage and numerical robustness. A mesh having subdivision connectivity can be described using a tree struct...
متن کاملSimplification of Fan-Meshes Models for Fast Rendering of Large 3D Point-Sampled Scenes
Fan-Meshes (FM) are a kind of geometrical primitives for generating 3D model or scene descriptions that are able to preserve both local geometrical details and topological structures. In this paper, we propose an efficient simplification algorithm for the FM models to achieve fast post-processing and rendering of large models or scenes. Given a global error tolerance for the surface approximati...

In this paper, we propose a new framework for the representation of deforming meshes by only updating necessary changes of the connectivity. The deforming meshes, which is also known as time-varying surfaces, are often constructed with static connectivity. To progressively represent the deforming meshes with level-of-details, people can simplify the meshes independently to obtain good simplific...
